Doctor Who- An Unearthly Child

Language

1) Narrative: The show starts with the two teachers-Ian Chester and Barbara Wright, in a school talking about a strange student called Susan. They mention how intelligent she is in both history and science so they decide to talk to her. Before they confront her Susan listens to music with a radio moving her hands with strange gestures until the teachers open the door. After this Barbara Wright convinces Ian to investigate where Susan lives. Eventually, they wait in a car at Susan's address to find out where she lives exactly. Once they see her walk into a junk yard they follow her and notice many strange things like mannequins, pictures and after a while they stumble upon a police box where they also meet the doctor that regards them as stupid and foolish. Promptly, Barbara and Ian shove there way into the police box and see Susan inside, next the Doctor believes that Barbara and Ian are not trust worthy so he sends them to another location. (possibly in the past)

Characters: Susan Foreman, The doctor,(They are seen as the knowledgeable characters as they know more then any of the cast)Ian Chester and Barbara Wright.(They represent the audience as they are less knowledgeable when it comes to the technology/science of the show)

Iconography: Diegetic sound, non-Diegetic sound, police box(TARDIS), Buttons, Car,futuristic lights, optical illusions.

Setting: Class Room, junk yard, car (interior), TARDIS, Unknown area(deserted and abandoned)

2) The equilibrium of an unearthly child is in the opening scene where you see all of the adolescents  having a usual day at school, it quickly turns to the disruption when Ian Chester and Barbara Wright start to talk about there concern about a student called Susan Foremen, after they talk to her they follow her and eventually it changes to recognition when they follow Susan and realize that she is only smart in certain subjects like science and history but terrible at things like math and English, further, more it is when they meet the doctor. After this the Doctor believes that he must get rid of Ian Chester and Barbara Wright, this becomes the reparation as the doctor wants to fix Susan's mistake of leading them to the TARDIS. Their isn't a new equilibrium however they leave the first episode as a cliff hanger to make the viewers curious about what will happen.

3)The Doctor would fit into the false hero as he is a arrogant character that doesnt like humanity and would rather satisfy his curiosity then help people, however he might not fit into any category of propps theory as he can be cruel yet helpful. Susan Would be a heroine as she is a heroic character and is innocent in the narrative. Barbara Wright would be the hero as was the one who addressed her concern to Ian Chester which made them investigate. The helper would be Ian Chester as he aids in finding Susan.

4)In an unearthly child the enigma codes I can find are the alien at the end of the episode who is only shown as a shadowy figure and also how the TARDIS functions.

5)There is some binary opposition shown in Doctor Who for an example. Light V dark is shown in the show when London is shown as gloomy while the the TARDIS is shown as light and futuristic.
Youth V Age is also shown when u see the contrast between the Doctor and Susan (the Doctor is old and Susan is young). Right V Wrong is also shown when we see that the doctor wants to dispose of the teachers while Susan wants them to stay and also so she can stay in that time.

Representation

1) Some of the stereotypes that are reinforced for men are that they are protective and less emotional. The Doctor doesn't care about the teacher safety or well being at all and Ian Chester needed to be convinced to go with Barbara to investigate about Susan, however the Doctor is shown to care about Susan as he didn't want them going inside the TARDIS and Ian Chester in the end went to go help Barbara find out more about Susan.
Some of the stereotypes that are subverted for men is that they are physically strong. Ian and the Doctor both are more intellectual then they are brutes as Ian is a teacher of science and the Doctor is an alien who has gained extra terrestrial knowledge.

2)Some of the stereotypes that are reinforced for women are that they are caring and intelligent.
Susan and Barbara are caring characters as Susan wanted to make sure the teachers weren't harmed by the Doctor and Barbara was concerned with Susan
Some of the stereotypes that are subverted for women is that they are unconfident and weak.
Susan is becomes really outspoken when the doctor decides to get rid of them and Barbara persuades Ian into helping her.

3)Old people are seen as seen wise and and all knowing and this is reinforced in an unearthly child as the Doctor is shown exactly like this as he is arrogant about his knowledge.
Young people are seen as foolish and irresponsible, this is subverted in an unearthly child as Susan is shown as polite and timid.

4)Every character is seen as white and no other ethnicity. This is probably because other ethnicities had a very low social class at the time so they probably wouldn't be a teacher, a doctor nor a student.

5)An Unearthly child shows us normal social classes, for E.g teachers with a male person teaching science and a female teacher (the more traditional teacher) teaching history. Furthermore an old man as a Doctor is seen as a little traditional.

Audience

1) Doctor Whos target audience would be for people aged 10+ or are interesting in Science Fiction and it has changed a lot since 1963 as they take on a little more adult themes.

2)The psychographic Doctor Who is looking for would be people with an interest in science and history.

3) The audience pleasures for Doctor Who are: Personal Identity: Some people will be able to relate to Susan Foreman as she is an outsider compared to the other students. Surveillance: The doctor educates the audience and Ian Chester about how the TARDIS works but in a complicated fashion. Diversion: The TARDIS is able to send the doctor and his companions to any time or place which isn't possible in the real world. Personal Relationships: Susan Foreman has problems with her grandfather which some people may be able to relate to.

4)Another audience pleasure which would effect people in 2018 would be nostalgia as this is the first episode of a show that has continued for several years.

5)A audience pleasure that can be applied to doctor who would be vicarious pleasures as it makes us experience something that we haven't seen before. Additionally it gives us information about how there world works and functions.

Industries
