Daily Mirror Case Study

Language

1) Masthead: The title block of the newspaper. usually surrounded by a red background.
Incentive: Encouraging the audience to take a look at the newspaper.
Plug: Something to catch the readers eye.
Splash Head: The lead story.
Slogan: sums up the ethos.
Kicker: Another headline to draw interest in the content inside.
Dateline: The month, year and day it was made.
Byline: A line in a newspaper naming the writer of an article.
Stand first: Introductory paragraph in bold.

3) The main story in the daily mirror is about a fraud police officer who gets interrogated.

4)The promotion of a free online betting. This would appeal to a lot of the daily mirrors readers as they are usually working-middle class which means they would be drawn to a newspaper that doesn't  cost anything. This lures them towards it and since that it drawn there attention they may buy it as it may have something they are interested in.

5)The daily mirror is organised mostly with bright and eye catching images. There writing is usually shortened and there headlines have puns and plays on words like "Prey and Display". Gossip is one of the main things they talk as the working class are usually interested into as they crave some kind of escapism. Images are usually spaced around using the rule of thirds.

Audience

1) The Daily Mirrors target audience are those who are in the working to upper class. Also the age they aim for is above 40+, as they are usually loyal consumers to the newspapers.

2)They appeal to their audience as they have the word Free in the center of the newspaper to attract the working class who are strugglers. This might make them look at the stories on the newspapers and intrigue them enough to buy it.

3)"The Prey and Display" headline would appeal to the Daily Mirrors audience as they are working class and some of them might be in a similar job so it could draw there attention.

4)Diversion is given to the audience by gossiping about celebrities as it gives there readers another perspective on someone elses fancier life style. Surveillance is given as they show information on how to deal with somethings, e.g "Your legal rights if u get a ticket". Personal identity is given to the audience by showing a well known people in there news paper which people may agree or disagree with.

5)Print newspapers are generally read by an older audience as they are much more loyal customers then any other age. Younger people usually wont buy newspapers as they can find out information on the news with a mobile device. Further more there audience is usually retired so they most likely wont be doing much,

Representation

1) The Daily Mirror represents the conservative party and the MPs in a negative light. We can see this from various kickers like "Reform the indefensible upper house" and "Fraud cops drill Tory MP". This shows how there political stance.

2) The Daily Mirror represents the golf club that is admitting female members as something that is unimportant. I can see this by the fact that it has very little text and is extremely small compared to other things like the advertisements which they may find has more significance.

3)They show ordinary people as innocent people who havens done anything wrong. They antagonize the conservatives and MPs as people who don't listen to the working class. The Daily Mirror treats itself as a voice for the ordinary people.

4)They present older people as pure and virtuous community who are exploited easily by there lack of knowledge on how the system fully works.

5)The Daily Mirror shows people who own businesses or make a lot of money as corrupt and self centered. They show this when they talk about reforming the indefensible upper house.

1) Reach PLC is the company that owns the Daily Mirror.

2)In the 1960s the Daily Mirror would sell around 3 million per year. In 2019 they sell 500, 000 per day.

3)The Daily Mirror has tried to combat the decline in sells with numerous of ways: Moving to a multi platform landscape, sharing there news based content on social media, its online content is free, they also make money from the advertising space online, etc

4)IPSO is an abbreviation for Independent Press Standards Organisations. They promote the highest professional standards in the UK. They also replaced PCC (Press Complaints Commission) which was a voluntary regulatory body and closed on September 2014.

5)People want stronger regulations of newspapers because they want better quality newspapers which could draw more people in.
